The latest Lightning Rods points and grading are out now, and it sees recent form man Dane Ferry with a useful lead at this stage of the Dilly Roofing Supplies NI Points Championship. Ben McKee is another driver in top form and he has moved up to second spot, with Francie Allen in third and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford in fourth. Rochford continues to lead the World Championship qualifying chase ahead of Winston Weir and Ferry.
Also available is the updated Junior Productions Murrays of Randalstown Young Guns Series points chart after Saturday's second round. Bradley McKinstry is top dog in this one, with round two winner Dan Campbell hot on his heels in second.
All drivers should note that they will now be required to make sure the roof of their car displays their current grade, as is the case right across the UK and as stipulated in the various rulebooks. The majority of the roof should be recognisable as the drivers grade, and we hope that everyone will work with us to implement the changes as smoothly as possible. After our July break any driver not displaying the correct roof colour could find themselves running from the rear of the grid, although we would hope that most teams will choose to carry their roof colour from this regrading on.

The first ever staging of The Les Beattie Memorial Trophy took place at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, and it was Templepatrick Lightning Rods ace Ben McKee who lifted the coveted award after being crowned Driver of the Day for his heat and final double. The event was staged in memory of Les Beattie, a great supporter of the local race scene, who was tragically taken from us late last year. Other final winners on the night were Dale McKay (ProStocks), Adam McFall (Ninja Karts), Thomas Morrison (Stock Rods) and Dan Campbell (Junior Productions).
From an excellent showing of 19 cars on track, the Lightning Rods produced three super races during the evening. In the first heat recent form man Gordy McKee stormed through from the red grade to take top spot from long term leader Gerry Rogers to secure the opening win of the night. Mark Taylor and Dane Ferry chased him home in that one. In heat two it was the other McKee brother, Ben, who took the lead from impressive novice grader Mark Corry to land the win. Winston Weir and Brendan McConnell tried their upmost to get on terms with the leader but just couldn't quite manage it.
In the final Corry again set the early pace before McKee scythed through from his blue grade start to take up the running. Weir and McConnell were again on a charge from the back but McKee had sufficient advantage to hold on for his second win of the night, and with it secure a return to the star grade for the next meeting. As the only driver to score two wins at the meeting, Ben was also the proud first recipient of The Les Beattie Memorial Trophy.
The ProStocks just keep returning in even bigger numbers each week, with a superb 38 taking to the track on Saturday evening at some stage or another. As expected the action came thick and fast, with incidents galore and yellow flag suspensions throughout the night.
The first heat saw one of the best races of the meeting with Dean Fleming taking up the running as we entered the final stages. A multi car battle for the lead continued as they took the last lap board. Local lad Jack Gilpin briefly took the lead before being brushed aside and in the midst of the chaos former World Cup Champion Tam Agnew slipped through to take the win ahead of Fleming and British Champion Ryan Abernethy.
Heat two saw things go right down to the wire once again, as Wayne McKay was dislodged from the premier spot on the last lap allowing Chris Hamill to grab the spoils amongst all the drama. The opening laps of the final were immense, with plenty of bumperwork in evidence and cars ending up in all sorts of shapes. Once a couple of suspensions had settled things down, novice grader McKay put his Ford Focus to good use by leading from start to finish. The Dungannon man had to resist a huge last bend lunge from Ryan Fleming to take his first ever win, with many more to follow on this showing. Fleming held on for second ahead of Robert McIlroy at the end of another excellent showing for what must surely be the most exciting class on the local ovals at present.

Once again a big field of Ninja Karts turned up for battle, with 6-year-old Sam Percy the latest new recruit and he got a trophy to mark his first ever appearance. Callum Magill set the early pace in the opening heat on his best showing to date, before Matthew Nicholl stormed through from the blue grade to take the chequered flag with star man Adam McFall coming through to second. In heat two there was a flag to flag win for Ballymena’s Adam Weir, who showed the others a clean pair of heels from the off for his first ever race win.
The final saw an early stoppage when Jake Woolsey collected the spun McFall Kart at the end of the back straight, the fastest part of the circuit. Despite considerable damage to Jake’s machine, he was fortunately relatively unhurt. At the full restart, McFall overcame the disadvantage of deranged steering on his kart to still storm through to a fantastic win. Stuart Emerson took runner up slot with long time leader Sophie Willis in third after another great showing from the youngsters.
Ballymoney driver Thomas Morrison has endured a more than difficult start to the 2013 season with his new Corsa ‘C’ Stock Rod, but he put his troubles behind him to take victory in the final on Saturday evening. He led the field from start to finish, although he was under severe pressure nearing the end from Ahoghill’s Marc Morrell and Jonny Cardwell. Such was the pressure that Morrison took the flag with his front brakes glowing red hot! Morrell took second in the end, ahead of Cardwell and Raymond Harper.
Earlier a great drive by Morrell had netted him victory in the opening heat ahead of Harper and Derek McMillan, before Jonny McMillan drove an excellent race to take heat two from Morrell and Cardwell.
It was Round 2 of the Murrays of Randalstown Young Guns Series for the Junior Productions, and they produced three different race winners on a very competitive night for the formula. Bradley McKinstry signalled his intentions with a controlled win in the opening heat over Ethan Dilly, before Edmund Davis produced his best performance in a number of meetings to take a convincing win in heat two.
McKinstry’s runner up slot in the second heat was enough to put him on pole for the final, which went on to produce an absolutely dramatic race from the young drivers. McKinstry just couldn’t get the breakaway that everyone expected at the start, with Davis tracking his every move. Down the back straight and Davis went for the lead, with McKinstry slamming the door hard shut resulting in contact between the pair. McKinstry lost massive ground, whilst Jordan Robinson was able to nip past both to assume the lead. Davis came back into the next bend, and robustly regained the lead which would become crucial later. Edmund led them home to the flag, but was docked two places for his misdemeanour which handed the win to Dan Campbell. Robinson took second with Davis unfortunately demoted to third.
All trophies on the evening were kindly presented by the Beattie family, and everyone at Tullyroan Oval in association with Spedeworth Motorsports trusts that they enjoyed their evening with us. |

The first Ninja Kart points chart and grading is now available. Ballymena star Adam McFall leads the way after his superb start to the season, closely followed by Portadown ace Jake Woolsey. Both will continue to start from the red grade, with leading lady Sophie Willis next up in third spot ahead of Stuart Emerson and Matthew Nicholl. The young terrors have been a massive hit with everyone at Tullyroan Oval, and with more karts set to join soon things can only get better!
Also now online is the latest chart for the 2.0 Hot Rods Wash 'n' Dash Challenge Series, where Shane Murray leads Adam Hylands and Gary Wilson after two rounds.
All Ninja Kart teams should note that they will now be required to make sure the roof of their kart displays their current grade, as is the case right across the UK and as stipulated in the various rulebooks. The majority of the roof should be recognisable as the drivers grade, and we hope that everyone will work with us to implement the changes as smoothly as possible. After our July break any driver not displaying the correct roof colour could find themselves running from the rear of the grid, although we would hope that most teams will choose to carry their roof colour from their first regrading on.

Spedeworth Superstox star Jason Cooper paid his first ever visit to Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, and stamped his authority on proceedings with a heat and final double On a sun baked evening of top quality oval action, other final winners in the LMC Trade Sales backed meeting were the sponsor himself David McMenemy (2.0 Hot Rods), Mark Taylor (Lightning Rods), Stefan McClelland (ProStocks) and Mark Crawford (Ninja Karts).
Former Superstox World Champion Jason Cooper from Norfolk paid us a visit on Saturday night, and promptly walked off with a heat and final double in the Superstox after a masterful display. The English ace powered through the field to take the win in the opener ahead of Gary Grattan and Denver Grattan, before Gary Grattan got the better of the Spedeworth Points Champion to uphold local honour and take the flag in the second heat with Neil Davison an impressive third.
All was set for an interesting final, and in the opening laps there were some excellent bumper exchanges involving the Grattan’s, Cooper and his fellow welcome English visitor Matt Carberry. Through it all Cooper unsurprisingly came out on tops, and quickly ran down pacesetters Nathan Beattie and Davison to take up the running and record a faultless final win on his first ever track visit. Gary Grattan could take plenty of credit for his second and he will certainly show well on his upcoming mainland trips. Cooper was full of praise for the Tullyroan track and facilities during his post race interview, and promised to be back later in the year for the Irish Open Championship along with a large group of fellow English drivers. Jason and Matt then set off on a marathon trek back across from Dublin to Holyhead and on to Aldershot to race from 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
Another very healthy field of 2.0 Hot Rods were boosted by Darren McAlpine and Shaz Law from Scotland for the second round of the Wash ‘n’ Dash Challenge Series. As always the racing was top rate and sometimes too close for comfort, and after a multiple car accident which took out a number of the star grade in heat one, it was Philip Beatty who picked up where he left off the previous week with victory in the opening heat ahead of McMenemy and Irish Champion Derek Martin.
McMenemy improved in heat two to take the flag, but was demoted two places by the race stewards for illegal contact, handing victory on a plate to Gary Wilson. Cookstown’s James Turkington had his best showing to date as he inherited second ahead of McMenemy.
The closed grid for the Wash 'n' Dash Challenge Series Round 2 final, with McMenemy on pole as top points scorer was always going to be a classic, and so it turned out. McMenemy got the early jump but Derek Martin and British Champion Shane Murray were on his case right from the off. McMenemy withstood the enormous pressure on his rear bumper, until backmarking returnee Nigel McCauley needlessly got himself involved in the lead scrap. This caused major problems for the leaders, none more so than Martin who got shovelled right out of contention. McMenemy held on from Murray right to the line to take his own sponsored trophy after another great showing from the ‘2 Litres’, although Beatty inherited second and Stuart Cochrane third after Murray was docked for his part in the demise of Martin earlier in the race.

On his return from a recent shoulder injury, Annaghmore’s Mark Taylor took a well deserved heat and final double in the Lightning Rods. ORCi Champion Brendan McConnell inherited the win in the opening heat of the night after Gerry Rogers had taken the flag but failed post race technical checks meaning he was loaded up for the night. Gordy McKee and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford were the place men. Taylor then took over for the next two races, taking the second heat handsomely over Gordy McKee and his brother Ben McKee, before try as he might Ben just couldn’t chase down the flying Taylor in the feature race. His double victory now means a rise to blue grade for next weekend’s racing. Aaron Stewart had one of his best runs in a while to grab third, ahead of Martin O’Flaherty in fourth.
Once again the ProStocks provided a huge grid, with 37 cars in action making it a very packed grid indeed. Steven Haugh avoided all the spins and skirmishes to take the first victory of the day ahead of Ryan Fleming who was showing a welcome return to form, and Chris Hamill in third.
Novice grader Graeme Kinghan took victory in heat two, which will long be remembered for a huge accident on the start/finish line when Cyril Hawe became stranded across the track and got collected by the field, leaving Conor McElmeel and recent form man Allen Cherry to name a few badly damaged. Despite the yellow suspension period Kinghan held on ahead of Mark McLaughlin and Sam McKinstry.
In recent weeks Irish and Irish Open Champion Stefan McClelland has had a torrid time, firstly destroying his number one car in an accident and having to press his new charger into service sooner than he would have wished. The new Vauxhall came good in the final though, as he powered through from the back to land a decisive win and announce that he is most certainly back....and in style too! Fleming again was the runner up ahead of Dungannon’s British Champion Ryan Abernethy.
The young 6-11 year old stars of the future entertained in the first Ninja Kart outing for a few weeks, and again a very healthy field took to the track including yet another newcomer in Lily Gallagher. It was another member of the ‘Girl Power’ brigade who was on top form, as young Sophie Willis showed the lads a clean pair of heels to sensationally win both heats! Matthew Nicholl and Stuart Emerson chased her over the line in the first heat, before Nicholl and Adam McFall were the placemen in heat two. Mark Crawford was the star of the final though, bursting through to the lead past early pacesetter Aaron Ward at the half way stage. Young Mark never looked back, and took his first ever final win ahead of Jack Hazlett and Willis.
