Spedeworth Superstox star Jason Cooper paid his first ever visit to Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night, and stamped his authority on proceedings with a heat and final double On a sun baked evening of top quality oval action, other final winners in the LMC Trade Sales backed meeting were the sponsor himself David McMenemy (2.0 Hot Rods), Mark Taylor (Lightning Rods), Stefan McClelland (ProStocks) and Mark Crawford (Ninja Karts).
Former Superstox World Champion Jason Cooper from Norfolk paid us a visit on Saturday night, and promptly walked off with a heat and final double in the Superstox after a masterful display. The English ace powered through the field to take the win in the opener ahead of Gary Grattan and Denver Grattan, before Gary Grattan got the better of the Spedeworth Points Champion to uphold local honour and take the flag in the second heat with Neil Davison an impressive third.
All was set for an interesting final, and in the opening laps there were some excellent bumper exchanges involving the Grattan’s, Cooper and his fellow welcome English visitor Matt Carberry. Through it all Cooper unsurprisingly came out on tops, and quickly ran down pacesetters Nathan Beattie and Davison to take up the running and record a faultless final win on his first ever track visit. Gary Grattan could take plenty of credit for his second and he will certainly show well on his upcoming mainland trips. Cooper was full of praise for the Tullyroan track and facilities during his post race interview, and promised to be back later in the year for the Irish Open Championship along with a large group of fellow English drivers. Jason and Matt then set off on a marathon trek back across from Dublin to Holyhead and on to Aldershot to race from 1pm on Sunday afternoon.
Another very healthy field of 2.0 Hot Rods were boosted by Darren McAlpine and Shaz Law from Scotland for the second round of the Wash ‘n’ Dash Challenge Series. As always the racing was top rate and sometimes too close for comfort, and after a multiple car accident which took out a number of the star grade in heat one, it was Philip Beatty who picked up where he left off the previous week with victory in the opening heat ahead of McMenemy and Irish Champion Derek Martin.
McMenemy improved in heat two to take the flag, but was demoted two places by the race stewards for illegal contact, handing victory on a plate to Gary Wilson. Cookstown’s James Turkington had his best showing to date as he inherited second ahead of McMenemy.
The closed grid for the Wash 'n' Dash Challenge Series Round 2 final, with McMenemy on pole as top points scorer was always going to be a classic, and so it turned out. McMenemy got the early jump but Derek Martin and British Champion Shane Murray were on his case right from the off. McMenemy withstood the enormous pressure on his rear bumper, until backmarking returnee Nigel McCauley needlessly got himself involved in the lead scrap. This caused major problems for the leaders, none more so than Martin who got shovelled right out of contention. McMenemy held on from Murray right to the line to take his own sponsored trophy after another great showing from the ‘2 Litres’, although Beatty inherited second and Stuart Cochrane third after Murray was docked for his part in the demise of Martin earlier in the race.

On his return from a recent shoulder injury, Annaghmore’s Mark Taylor took a well deserved heat and final double in the Lightning Rods. ORCi Champion Brendan McConnell inherited the win in the opening heat of the night after Gerry Rogers had taken the flag but failed post race technical checks meaning he was loaded up for the night. Gordy McKee and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford were the place men. Taylor then took over for the next two races, taking the second heat handsomely over Gordy McKee and his brother Ben McKee, before try as he might Ben just couldn’t chase down the flying Taylor in the feature race. His double victory now means a rise to blue grade for next weekend’s racing. Aaron Stewart had one of his best runs in a while to grab third, ahead of Martin O’Flaherty in fourth.
Once again the ProStocks provided a huge grid, with 37 cars in action making it a very packed grid indeed. Steven Haugh avoided all the spins and skirmishes to take the first victory of the day ahead of Ryan Fleming who was showing a welcome return to form, and Chris Hamill in third.
Novice grader Graeme Kinghan took victory in heat two, which will long be remembered for a huge accident on the start/finish line when Cyril Hawe became stranded across the track and got collected by the field, leaving Conor McElmeel and recent form man Allen Cherry to name a few badly damaged. Despite the yellow suspension period Kinghan held on ahead of Mark McLaughlin and Sam McKinstry.
In recent weeks Irish and Irish Open Champion Stefan McClelland has had a torrid time, firstly destroying his number one car in an accident and having to press his new charger into service sooner than he would have wished. The new Vauxhall came good in the final though, as he powered through from the back to land a decisive win and announce that he is most certainly back....and in style too! Fleming again was the runner up ahead of Dungannon’s British Champion Ryan Abernethy.
The young 6-11 year old stars of the future entertained in the first Ninja Kart outing for a few weeks, and again a very healthy field took to the track including yet another newcomer in Lily Gallagher. It was another member of the ‘Girl Power’ brigade who was on top form, as young Sophie Willis showed the lads a clean pair of heels to sensationally win both heats! Matthew Nicholl and Stuart Emerson chased her over the line in the first heat, before Nicholl and Adam McFall were the placemen in heat two. Mark Crawford was the star of the final though, bursting through to the lead past early pacesetter Aaron Ward at the half way stage. Young Mark never looked back, and took his first ever final win ahead of Jack Hazlett and Willis.

The latest points charts are now available to view online.
In the National Hot Rods, Glenn Bell has been crowned Wash 'n' Dash Northern Ireland Champion, and will be joined in the front section of the World Championship grid by John Christie. Our other qualifiers are Stewart Doak, Mark Heatrick, Gary Woolsey and Keith Martin.
The first Stock Rods grading since they became a fully fledged Tullyroan Oval in assocaition with Spedeworth Motorsports formula has also been published. Topping the chart is Colin McNiece, with a slender lead over Ben McCully and Jonny Cardwell. McNiece will move from yellow to red grade, and also heads the NI Supreme Championship chart which includes all visiting drivers and will form the grid for the end of season NI Supreme Championship. In the PC Paints & Components Challenge Series, Tipperary visitor Colm O'Sullivan leads the pack after his excellent round one outing.
The final World Championship qualifying points for the 2.0 Hot Rods are also available, and Shane Murray has finished at the head of the chart from which our 10 representatives for Ipswich in July will be chosen.
In the Lightning Rods, Dane Ferry's recent purple patch sees him head the Greystone Joinery and Construction Ltd Challenge Series after the second round, whilst Jordan Rochford continues at the top of the World Championship qualifying chart.
All Stock Rod drivers should note that they will now be required to make sure the roof of their car displays their current grade, as is the case right across the UK and as stipulated in the various rulebooks. The majority of the roof should be recognisable as the drivers grade, and we hope that everyone will work with us to implement the changes as smoothly as possible. After our July break any driver not displaying the correct roof colour could find themselves running from the rear of the grid, although we would hope that most drivers will choose to carry their roof colour from their first regrading on.

Local racer Allen Cherry was the star turn at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night when he took a resounding three victories from three starts in the competitive ProStocks class. On a night which saw over 100 cars in race action, other feature race wins fell to Gordy McKee (Lightning Rods), Colm O’Sullivan(Stock Rods), Philip Beatty (2.0 Hot Rods) and Dan Campbell (Junior Productions).
There was a bumper field on hand as usual in the ProStocks division, with the 37 cars giving us a packed track which would always lead to action galore on track. Graeme Kinghan led the way in the opening heat, but he was helpless as the more experienced drivers surged their way through from the rear of the grid. Allen Cherry was that man, and after a treble at the last ProStocks meeting he made it four from four with a controlled drive to the flag. James Litter chased him home ahead of Strabane’s Ryan Fleming.
Cherry was again in scintillating form in the second heat, avoiding the carnage as he worked his way through to the front once again. As he took the flag for his second victory of the evening, he was followed across the line by Steven Haugh and British Champ Ryan Abernethy.
Two heat wins meant a rise to red grade for the final for Cherry, but if anything the extra handicap spurred him on and he surged through the field once again. Even a couple of caution periods couldn’t halt his progress, and he took an astonishing sixth win from six starts ahead of Haugh and Jack Gilpin.
Tipperary teenager Colm O’Sullivan made the long trek to Tullyroan on Saturday night and left with a superb prize for victory in the opening round of the Stock Rods PC Paints & Components Challenge Series.
Visitor O’Sullivan laid down a marker with a fine win in the opening heat, running down early pacesetter Colin McNiece to take the win. Irish Champion Stevie McNiece was also looking very sharp in second with Colin McNiece having to make do with third in the end.
Colin McNiece made his early advantage from the yellow grade count in heat two, as he made sure he held off the advances of the on form O’Sullivan . Waringstown’s Ben McCully was third ahead of Dublin ace Gary Butler who had earlier changed an engine following problems in practice.
The grid for the final was formed from the heat results, and pole sitter O’Sulivan made no mistake at the off. As he settled into a firm lead, Stevie McNiece got the better of the family duel with Colin to go second. Fastest man on the track however was Ballymena veteran Victor McAfee, and he soon sliced through to third before putting pressure on Stevie McNiece nearing the finish. O’Sullivan was home and dry to take the spoils across the border, with McNiece and McAfee second and third ahead of McCully in fourth.

It was the second round of the Lightning Rods Greystone Joinery and Construction Ltd Challenge Series, and it was pleasing to see series sponsor Jason Devlin back in harness for what is an all too rare on track appearance these days. Local Annaghmore racer Mark Taylor, who was racing through the pain barrier following a shoulder injury, took the win in heat one over Templepatrick’s Gordy McKee and Drogheda’s Gerry Rodgers. In this one Devlin and Ben McKee had a major coming together in the closing stages which almost saw McKee’s car in the wall roof first!
Gordy McKee went one better in the second outing, leading home his repaired brother Ben for a family one-two with Winston Weir in third. The final saw the grid made up from points scored in the heats, and despite a very poor getaway McKee was able to turn his pole position start into an immediate lead. Dane Ferry soon emerged as his nearest challenger, and despite his best efforts he just couldn’t get on terms with Gordy who made a welcome return to victory lane after a recent barren spell. Ferry was runner up ahead of Weir in third once again.
The 2.0 Hot Rods were once again the main attraction for many, and as always the on track action didn’t disappoint. Nutts Corner driver Philip Beatty debuted his new Citroen Saxo and soon put it to good use by getting a clear lead in the opening heat of the night. With the flag in sight, Beatty’s new mount had a problem on the final lap and Davy McMenemy was able to pip him to the flag by the narrowest of margins.
Cookstown driver James Turkington was the early pacesetter in heat two, and the novice grader put on his best showing to date before succumbing to the pressure from behind in the second half of the race. Ballyclare veteran Gary Wilson stormed through to take the flag in the end, leading home British Champion Shane Murray and Mervyn Emerson at flagfall.
Andrew Emerson set the early pace in the final, but Beatty soon moved through to take up the running. There was to be no repeat of his heat one issues in this one however, and he celebrated his first meeting in his new car with an excellent victory. Emerson was runner up on this occasion, with McMenemy and Adam Best next across the line after an enthralling race.
Randalstown’s Dan Campbell was another who showed a fantastic return to form, as he was undoubtedly the star of the Junior Productions with a brace of wins. He took victory in the opening heat ahead of fellow blue grader Edmund Davis, with Bradley McKinstry the first of the star men home in third. Davis went one better in heat two to land a morale boosting victory, with Campbell this time his runner up and Dean McCrory showing best of the red grade in third.
In the final the red grade battle was simply immense, with McKinstry, McCrory, Jaimie McCurdy and Shane McMillan racing wheel to wheel for the entire race. The battle was conducted superbly by the youngsters in a manner even the adult racers would have been proud of. This was of little significance to Campbell though, who left them trailing in his wake to take his second win of the night ahead of McCurdy, McMillan, McCrory and McKinstry.

The latest Tullyroan Oval in association with Spedeworth Motorsports points update sees the latest charts for National Hot Rods, Superstox, Reliant Robins and National Bangers.
With just one round to go in Wash 'n' Dash World Series NI, Glenn Bell still tops the standings and looks set to guarantee himself a front start in the World Final at Ipswich. Behind though, a whole posse of drivers are chasing elusive qualification for the biggest race in the sport. Bell also currently tops the season long Cirrus Plastics Tullyroan Oval Track Championship ahead of John Christie and Mark Heatrick.
The first grading for the new Superstox class sees Gary Grattan with a slender lead at the top of the standings over Kyle Beattie and Rab Stewart. The start by the open wheelers has exceeded all expectations, and the class can only grow from it's exceptional beginning. In the NIOvalTV Series, World Champion Stuart Gilchrist heads the standings over fellow Scot David Frame.
All drivers should note that they will now be required to make sure the roof of their car displays their current grade, as is the case right across the UK and as stipulated in the various rulebooks.
In the other updates, Billy McClean tops the Reliant Robins chart whilst Steven Reynolds continues to head the National Bangers standings.
