  A number of our classes have upcoming away championship dates in the not too distant future. First up is the Lightning Rods ORCi Championship at Tipperary on June 10th, and already eight drivers have booked in to travel. Any further drivers wishing to race must book in this week if possible.
The Prostocks travel to Lochgelly in Scotland for the European and Open Scottish Championships the following weekend. Four drivers have expressed an interest in this one so far, and these bookings and any others must be confirmed by the end of this week too.
Looking further ahead, the Ipswich Spedeweekend in July sees the British Championships for both 2.0 Hot Rods and Lightning Rods this year. Ten places are available for each class, and these will be filled after this Saturday night's racing. Drivers in or around the top ten slots should advise Darren Black as soon as possible if they wish to travel or not, with Saturday at the race meeting being the deadline. The same applies for the 2.0 Hot Rods World Championship in South Africa. |

 The latest points have been released for the Junior Productions formula, and they see novice grader Edmund Davis topping the chart by 21 points from Stuart Cochrane. Under the grading rules, Edmund can only rise to blue grade, with Cochrane, Bradley McKinstry and Daniel Campbell now occupying the red grade. Ethan Dilly's superb start to the year sees him rise to the blue grade too.
The Murrays of Randalstown Young Guns Series points are also now online, with Davis also in front in this one ahead of McKinstry and Fionn Donnelly. |

 A new chapter in Ulster short oval racing kicked off in fine style on Saturday evening when the brand new Tullyroan Oval facility opened its gates for the first time. A bumper crowd enjoyed an action packed fifteen race programme on the sun drenched track, where the big winner was Portadown driver Andy Cochrane as he scorched home to a heat and final double in his Mercedes in the National Hot Rods. It was an historic night all round at the new venue, with Portadown legend and three times World Champion Norman Woolsey rolling back the years to thrill the crowds with some demonstration runs in his classic Ford Anglia. Norman of course was the promoter when racing was last staged in the area at Shamrock Park a decade ago. Other final winners on the night were Ben McKee (Lightning Rods), Sam McKinstry (ProStocks), Stevo McGrath (National Bangers) and Dan Campbell in the Junior Productions.
The elite National Hot Rods were contesting the penultimate round of their World Series, with places in July’s Word Championship up for grabs amongst the main runners in the class. As the star men with World Championship aspirations fought between themselves in the main pack, it left the others to scoop all three race wins. Ian McReynolds took the first win of the night, holding off recent recruit and 2.0 Hot Rod man Andy Cochrane. Try as Andy might, he just couldn’t find a way through as Ian took the flag. A couple of false starts to heat two saw the tension rise to boiling point, and it was Cochrane who got the jump to lead all the way to the flag and record a fine victory indeed, this time ahead of Adam Maxwell and Portadown favourite Gary Woolsey.
The final was again all about Cochrane, who stamped his authority early on before taking the chequered flag to complete his double for the night, and also his first feature race win in the formula. Maxwell again did his World Final hopes no harm whatsoever with another great drive to second, ahead of Woolsey and Glenn Bell.
Templepatrick driver Ben McKee was the toast of the Lightning Rods, as he overcame damage from an earlier heat to bounce back and take an emphatic win in the feature race final. Local Annaghmore driver Mark Taylor, who can literally see the track from his front door, held off another local, Winston Weir, to take the formula’s first win at the new stadium. Antrim ace Stephen Emerson, the current Irish Champion, took third after a storming drive from the rear of the field. Weir went one better in heat two, the Killyman driver taking a popular chequered flag, with Emerson in second and young Jordan Rochford third. Over the longer final distance, it all pointed towards an Emerson win, but that was without factoring in McKee. Having recently dropped to the blue grade following a difficult start to the season, Ben got everything together to move into a vast early lead that he would never lose. Emerson tried his best, but had to be content with second ahead of former National Champion David Hearst.

The budget ProStocks category as always boasted a packed grid, with 26 cars coming under starters orders for heat one at their brand new home. Tandragee’s British Champ Davy Morrison was the first to adapt to the new circuit as he stormed through from the rear of the grid to claim the first race for the class at Tullyroan, ahead of Donegal driver Damien McLaughlin. Local lad Warren Thompson was showing some excellent pace from the front of the grid in all three races, and only a late surge from Irish Champion Billy Finnegan denied him the win in the second heat, whilst he also claimed runner up slot in the final after Sam McKinstry had worked himself ahead in the second half of the race. As McKinstry took the flag ahead of Thompson, both had one eye on their mirrors as Morrison was closing in at a great rate of knots, but ultimately had to be content with third after a great night’s racing from the ProStocks indeed.
The Junior Productions took to the new oval like ducks to water to stage three excellent races. Novice grader Edmund Davis had the honour of winning the first ever race at the track when he took heat one, which saw landowner Carmy Gilpin on the starters podium to see the venture kick off in style. Ethan Dilly chased hard, but it was Davis who got his name into the history books and took the NI Oval TV sponsored award. The meeting also doubled up as the opening round of the Murrays of Randalstown Young Guns Series, and in heat two Davis again signed off from the novice grade in style with another dominant win, this time ahead of Bradley McKinstry and Stuart Cochrane. The final featured a closed grid based on points scored in the heats, which was always going to lead to a much different race. After an early crash had eliminated a few runners, McKinstry moved ahead but soon had Dan Campbell on his tail in his potent Toyota. Dan soon found a gap on the inside to move ahead, and despite Bradley’s best attempts it was Campbell who stormed home to record the final win. McKinstry took his second runner up spot of the evening, with Cochrane adding another third to his tally.
The National Bangers produced their usual crash, bang, wallop racing that certainly isn’t for the feint-hearted, with some excellent wrecks on show to underline just how fast and hard hitting the venue will be. Recent top dog Stevo McGrath got to grips best as he won the feature event, the Spring Classic, having nudged past fellow Dubliner Paul Compelli mid race. Amid the carnage Compelli held on for second, ahead of Cavan driver Enda McKiernan, who took the trophy for the Best Presented Banger in his stunning Ford Cougar. Local driver Jonny Murdock had to make do with fourth, before McGrath completed a double by taking the Allcomers race win as well, ahead of Louth’s Alan O’Neill and another Dublin driver, Aaron Kelly.

 Tullyroan Oval can announce, after contact with Spedeworth Motorsports, that the qualifying period for this years World Final, to be held in Pretoria on September 14th/15th, will now end on Saturday June 2nd.
At this point, the top three drivers who wish to travel to South Africa will be confirmed from the World Championship qualifying chart.
For the meeting, Spedeworth will supply a racecar, accommodation for the driver plus 1 as well as transport for the duration of your stay in South Africa. Drivers will only need to pay their flight and any damage which they incur, although Spedeworth will try to keep this cost to a minimum.
The cars in South Africa are currently undergoing a complete rebuild, and by having the travellers confirmed early they will be repainted in the colours of our drivers, all ready for the World Championship showdown.
